Although enormously privileged, Assyrian royal women clearly did not have the same opportunities and freedoms the men around them enjoyed—as Libbali-sharrat’s query reveals, they could not even speak to their gods without apologizing. Still, as members of the king’s inner circle, Assyrian queens and princesses played roles that had far greater political implications than the shenanigans of the minor royals who are the bread and butter of modern tabloid journalism.

As described above, women were particularly influential during Esarhaddon’s reign, a time full of ups and downs. Assyrian armies scored some great victories, but inside Assyria, a number of rebellions occurred that shook the empire to its core. Even Naqia, her considerable political talents notwithstanding, could not prevent these crises. Perhaps the outsized role she had gotten used to playing actually contributed to them. It was in 671 BCE that the political drama of Esarhaddon’s tumultuous last years reached its peak.
